Cisco bylo založeno v roce 1984 malou skupinou vědců ze Stanfordovy univerzity . V súčasnej dobe zaměstnává viac než 65 000 zamestnancov po celom svete. Nová hodnota spoločnosti je odhadovaná na 148 miliárd dolárov.
Edward Snowden odhalil, že NSA do produktov Cisco zabudovala zadnú vrátku , avšak neexistuje dôkaz, že by o tom firma Cisco vedela.
